SPSV WINS SWEEPSTAKES!
After a two-year COVID absence, SPSV Music returned to the competition scene. On April 9, 2022, three of our groups (Choristers, Women’s Choir, Wind Ensemble) participated in the WorldStrides OnStage Heritage Festival in San Francisco. Twelve groups from seven different high schools from across California performed. In the end, SPSV won the top prize: Sweepstakes Award for Best Overall Program.
Sweepstakes is given to the school earning the highest combined score for all its performing groups. It was truly a group effort from all of our singers and instrumentalists. In addition, Emma Boyle (Class of 2024) won the Maestro Award for her solo during the Women’s Choir performance.
Choristers
SPSV Choristers is an audition-only mixed choir. Capable of learning and performing complex, 4- to 8-part choral music, students sing with proper diction, breathing, and vocal technique. Students develop their music reading skills, learning music on their own with the aid of part recordings. Students work together, take pride in their achievements, and share their accomplishments with the community through concert performances and regional, national, and international festivals.

This class aims to expose students to the foundational principals, concepts, and mechanics of collaborative music through the applied medium of a wind ensemble. Students will become proficient in the pillars of music, including a sound understanding of musical structure and notation, deciphering of basic rhythms, and the individual techniques of applied instruments and their roles in the ensemble. With emphasis on personal accountability, students will become proficient in the skills of musical preparation, personal practice techniques, ensemble rehearsal techniques and etiquette, as well as understanding the historical and contextual settings of performance material. The Wind Ensemble will give a minimum of two concerts each school year. Additional performances may be seasonal, competitive, or in support of other organizations and/or functions within the school.
